The Glacier Express Train

The Glacier Express is known as the "World's slowest express train." It runs from Zermatt to St. Moritz, traversing the length of Switzerland.  Until 1982, it could only go part way during the winter. Since then, they have found ways to get the train through the high Oberalp Pass during the winter season. This pass is 2,033 meters high. Now tourists can enjoy the trip at almost any time of year.

Riding the Glacier Express is quite an experience. The complete trip takes about 7-1/2 hours from end to end. During this time, the train crosses 291 bridges, passes through 91 tunnels, and climbs up and down through two valleys and the mountains that divide them. The train utilizes a rack-and-pinion system that helps the train ascend the steep mountainsides and to slow its descent down the other side.

The Glacier Express has a long and interesting history. Begun in the 1920s to cater to the traveling upper classes, who discovered the charms of Switzerland.  In 1930, for the very first time the Glacier Express ran all the way from Zermatt to St. Moritz. A dining car was added for the first time to cater to the travelers. By the early 1940s, the railway was completely converted to electric trains. After a brief hiatus during World War II, the Glacier Express once again ran its route. Tourists continued to flock to ride this unique and comfortable train during the 1950s and 1960s. A tunnel finished in 1982 allowed the train to make the full run even in the dead of winter.

Today's modern, air-conditioned coaches (some with panoramic views) continue to attract many tourists every year.  The railroad offers a wide variety of travel packages and beautifully catered meals are offered onboard.

The Glacier Express is a marvelous way to experience the beauty of the Swiss Alps. You will be awestruck by the majesty of the Matterhorn and amazed at the quaint little towns tucked along the way. No matter the season, the views are glorious. In summer you will see green meadows dotted with colorful wild flowers, crystal waterfalls and rivers and amazingly sheer cliffs, all back dropped by the snow-covered Alps, which reach for the sky. In the winter, you'll enjoy deep snow-covered forests, meadows and towns… each frosted like a holiday postcard. Be prepared to take a lot of photos. You won't want to forget this trip.

The Glacier Express is still a working train. Locals take it to go from town to town, and the train stops frequently along the route. In fact, to ride certain portions of the route, you must buy tickets from individual railroad companies. But that is part of the charm of this tour. Don't forget your souvenir slanted glass… the Glacier Express has this fun item as part of its china service.

If you are lucky enough to get to Switzerland, you can't leave without taking the Glacier Express. It will be an experience you will treasure for the rest of your life. It truly takes you through some breathtaking scenery that you will never forget.
