Waterton Glacier International Peace Park

In 1932, Waterton Lakes National Park in Canada and Glacier National Park in Montana, USA merged. That union formed what is known now as Waterton Glacier International Peace Park; an unspoiled piece of nature much as it was hundreds of years ago.

In December of 1995, Waterton Glacier International Peace Park became part of the World Heritage Site. (This is a program which catalogues, names, and conserves sites of outstanding cultural or natural importance to the common heritage of humanity.)  The park is also well known for its bio diversity, geological history, and spectacular scenery. Within it's borders there are roughly 1200 varieties of plant life, a myriad of wildlife, forests, mountains, lakes, glaciers, and much more.

There are a number of hotels, chalets, and inns located throughout the park which offer great accommodations. You may even recognize the names of a couple of the more famous lodges such as the Kilmorey Lodge and the Aspen Village Inn.

There are a variety of things that you can do at or near the park such as cross country skiing, camping, ice climbing, sail boarding, tobogganing, horseback riding, and quite a few scenic drives. There are also 700 miles of hiking trails to choose from in the Waterton area, many of which have stunning mountain views along the way. You can even enjoy a hike to the Continental Divide which is located in the park.

Fishing here is not as easy as you might think. However, catching the occasional rainbow trout, eastern brook trout, kokanee salmon and arctic grayling is definitely possible. The regulars say that one of the best streams for fishing is Midvale Creek. But be forewarned that a lot of the streams are extremely cold even during the summer months.

There are many exciting things to do and see here as you can likely imagine from this short overview. Whether you choose to spend your time hiking, fishing, camping, or any one of the many other adventurous activities the park offers, you can't help but enjoy the rugged mountains, crystal clear lakes, fishing streams, and amazing wildlife that are all a part of Waterton Glacier International Peace Park.
